Reduction of methane from the Irish cattle herd through animal genetics in the headlines

Publication of the world’s first national genomic evaluations for methane emissions in Irish beef cattle, developed from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine funded ‘GreenBreed’ collaboration led by Dr Donagh Berry of Teagasc, a leading MTI researcher, has been announced this week.

The significance of the genetic influence on methane emissions identified in the ‘GreenBreed’ collaboration, together with the importance of the MTI Phase II project undertaking a whole life cycle analysis in relation to genetics and methane, are discussed by Dr Berry in an article published in the Irish Farmers Journal.
